Is having a driver's license is a requirement for renting a motorbike in Bali?

Updated: Jan 10

Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia that offers natural beauty, culture, and unique cuisine. Many tourists choose to explore Bali using two-wheeled vehicles such as motorbikes because they are practical and allow them to access places that are difficult to reach by other means of transportation. However, before renting a motorbike in Bali, there are several important things to understand regarding the requirements that must be fulfilled, one of which is having a driver's license (SIM).

First and foremost, a driver's license is required as a guarantee of driving ability. Riding a motorbike on Bali's roads requires special skills and expertise, especially if you are not used to the traffic conditions in Bali. Roads in Bali can be very busy and crowded, even in tourist hotspots. Therefore, having a driver's license can prove that you have passed a driving ability test and have a basic understanding of traffic rules that apply in Indonesia.

Secondly, a driver's license is required as a guarantee of safety while driving. Most vehicles in Bali do not have insurance, and if an accident occurs, the cost of repairs and medical treatment must be borne by the motorbike rider. If the rider does not have a driver's license, the cost could be much higher and more difficult to handle. In addition, motorbike riders without a driver's license are vulnerable to legal action by local security forces.

Thirdly, having a driver's license is required by Indonesian law. According to the Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 118 of 2015 regarding Motorbike Riders, anyone who rides a motorbike on the road must have a driver's license. If found to be without a driver's license, the motorbike rider can be subject to fines or even imprisonment.

Although there are some motorbike rental places in Bali that do not require a driver's license as a requirement to rent a motorbike, not having a driver's license can endanger oneself, others, and can result in legal problems. Therefore, it is highly recommended to have a driver's license before deciding to rent a motorbike in Bali.

In conclusion, renting a motorbike in Bali is a practical and economical choice to explore the island. However, make sure that you have a driver's license before starting the journey because having a driver's license can provide a guarantee of driving ability and safety and meet the legal requirements that apply in Indonesia. Always prioritize safety while driving, obey traffic rules, and be careful on the road.
