Bali Tourism Drivers Protest: Demanding Quota Restrictions for Online Taxis

Kuota Taksi Online Dibatasi

Thousands of tourism drivers in Bali held a protest in front of the Bali Regional House of Representatives (DPRD Bali) on January 6, 2025. The demonstration aimed to voice their concerns over the increasing presence of online taxis in Bali, which they believe threatens their livelihood. The protesters, organized under the Bali Tourism Drivers Struggle Forum (FPDPB), submitted six key demands to the local government.

Demands of the Tourism Drivers

During the protest, FPDPB presented several demands, including:

  1. Restricting the quota of online taxis in Bali to prevent unhealthy competition with local tourism drivers.

  2. Enforcing regulations on license plate usage, specifically vehicles with non-DK plates (outside Bali), which are frequently used by online taxis.

  3. Implementing strict regulations on the operation of online taxis, including monitoring operational permits and service areas.

  4. Prioritizing local drivers to support sustainable tourism in Bali.

  5. Regulating online taxi fares to prevent the disruption of existing price structures among tourism drivers.

  6. Establishing a regular dialogue forum between the government, driver associations, and online transportation service providers.

Impact of Online Taxis on the Local Tourism Industry

According to the tourism drivers, the uncontrolled presence of online taxis has significantly reduced their income. Additionally, they argue that online taxi services often disregard local culture and fail to contribute meaningfully to the development of the local tourism community.

Non-DK plated vehicles have also become a major concern. Many tourism drivers complain that these vehicles frequently pick up passengers without proper authorization in tourist hotspots such as airports, hotels, and popular attractions.

Response from the Government and DPRD Bali

In an initial response, the DPRD Bali expressed its willingness to accommodate the drivers' aspirations. The head of the DPRD Bali committed to facilitating a dialogue between tourism drivers, local government, and online taxi operators to find a fair solution for all parties.

However, some stakeholders noted that online taxis have become a necessity for tourists due to their convenience, transparent pricing, and high accessibility. Therefore, any solution must balance the interests of both tourists and the local community.

Implications for the Transportation Business in Bali

This protest serves as an important signal for all transportation industry players in Bali, including online taxi providers and tourism transportation operators. If quota restrictions are implemented, it could lead to significant changes in Bali's transportation landscape. On the other hand, stricter regulations could help create healthier competition and support the sustainability of the local tourism industry.

For tourists, this issue may impact their travel experience, especially if access to transportation services becomes more limited. Therefore, strategic actions from all parties are crucial to ensure that Bali remains a top destination with fair and high-quality transportation services for all.
